Monday Morning Linen Trivia - How Many Pounds of Laundry Does United Linen Do In A Day?

We clean alot of linen and uniform products in a day's time.  The other day we were talking about the amount of product that comes through our facility in a day's time and it hit me just how much that really is.  The product we clean is in different stages of cleaning throughout the plant and so even for us, (except for maybe the guys who load the washers and dryers :-) ) we forget or have a hard time visualizing that number.  So here it is...  60,000 lbs average daily.

OK, that sounds like alot, but let me help you get a better picture of what that might look like.  60,000 lbs would be equivalent of 14 cars (with a average curb-weight of 4100 lbs.according to The US Dept of Energy).

     

So there you have it.  60,000 lbs... that's alot of tablecloths and napkins.

I just received another postcard in the mail today.

This one was from Paris.

This makes a total of 2 in the last year.  The other postcard (see picture above) is from a vendor who spent Christmas with family in Hawaii.

On our last vacation to DisneyWorld, I sent a postcard to every one of my customers.  My wife and I spent the better part of a morning writing, addressing and stamping postcards.  The funny thing, and one I did not anticiapte, is more than several customers had my postcard stuck on their wall or propped up on their desk for months after we had sent them.  I quickly realized that the postcards helped my customers feel a closer bond to me and our business...like they had a souvenir.

In this day of emailing, instant-messaging, cell phoning, texting, twittering, blogging, blah, blah, blah, people treat hand-written notes/postcards like rare and precious jewels.  So the next time you're on vacation or a business trip, and you want to strengthen the relationshiop of a friend or business associate, send a postcard and see how long they hold on to it.

Tablecloths used in comedy

One of the funniest Frasier episodes is "IQ" which aired during their 6th season.  Frasier and and his brother Niles find themselves at a luncheon with 3 Nobel-prize winning scientists.  Before the scientists show up, mayhem ensues as the two competitive brothers, exhausted from trying to learn more than the other, have a meltdown in the middle of the restaurant, with Niles overmedicated on the floor and Frazier accidentally pulling the dinnerware off the table after having tucked the tablecloth along with his shirt, into his pants. 

It's not often that you see linen used as a part of a comedy routine.  But then again, I'm probably the only one who would notice such a thing.

New Frontiers - Joplin, MO

 

Ever so often an opportunity presents itself and we find ourselves expanding our borders. A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to acquire a linen company, Coul Corp, in Joplin, MO. After looking the deal over we decided to make it happen. So now we are excited to announce to the world that we are now open for business in Joplin, MO. It is a tremendous honor to serve the people in Joplin. Joplin is a fantastic town in the Southwest corner of Missouri; a town that found it fame and fortune in lead and zinc back in the 1870s. Today it's a thriving town of 49,000 with a market area population of 500,000. Joplin is home to celebrities such as Robert Cummings, Langston Hughes, Dennis Weaver and Darrell Porter. The types of businesses that make up the economic landscape of Joplin include medical, retail, transportation and manufacturing, just to name a few.

These are exciting times at United Linen & Uniform Services and we want to thank all of Joplin, for making us feel so welcome.
