The Copper Restaurant was overflowing with well-wishers on Saturday, November, 8th, as family and friends gathered to celebrate Carmel Holeman’s 42 years of service at United Linen and Uniform Services.
Mat Saddoris, owner of United Linen & Uniform Services, and his wife Rechelle, led the tribute to Carmel, expressing his family’s gratitude for Carmel’s 4 decades of dedicated service and loyalty.
“It’s not often that you get to celebrate someone who has worked for a company for 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years, said Saddoris. “If we had started out handing plaques along time ago, she would have a whole wall full of them.”
Holeman, a life-long resident of Bartlesville , began working for Saddoris Textile Maintenance in 1966. Ironically, what started as just a week-long stint turned into 42 years of employment.
“Ida Infield asked me if I could work for a week in the mending department,” Holeman said. “And 42 years later, here I am. I had prayed for a job and had no idea the job would last so long.” Holeman added, “That just goes to show you need to be careful what you pray for. God definitely has a sense of humor.”
After working in the mending department, Holeman found herself doing various jobs such as uniform shirt press, wrap-out, being an attendant at the Coin-O-Matic (in the Comanche Center) and then to the office.
“From the Coin-O-Matic I moved into the office and had several duties over the years,” said Holeman. ‘I’ve done everything from payroll and accounts receivable to bookkeeping, where I’ve been since 1976.”
Edro Daniel was the office manager at the time Holeman moved into the administrative department of Saddoris Textile Maintenance. Holeman was moved to the
Professional Building, working along side Arlon and Gerald Saddoris, the owners of the company.
“The titles have changed over the years, but I’ve basically been doing the same thing ever since I moved into the office,” said Holeman.
When asked what it is that she likes most about working at United Linen, Holeman says it’s the people.
“I’ve been able to work with a lot of interesting people over the years,” said Holeman. “There have been some real characters. And when I start thinking about one, I start thinking about all the others and the fun stories that go along with them.”
.
But after 40+ years, Holeman is looking forward to retiring and starting a new chapter in her life.
“There are a couple of things I look forward to,” said Holeman. “One of them is being able to go anywhere whenever I want. Bookkeeping required that I be at work during certain times of the month and certain times of the year, as anyone in bookkeeping can tell you. So it will be nice not to be on such a rigid schedule.”
“The other thing I look forward to is spending more time with my grandchildren,” said Holeman. “I have 6 grandchildren and that should keep me busy.”
